Sampson Walklate born around 1885 Derby, Derbyshire, Died during the First World War on the Somme 3rd September
1916. Was in the 16th battalion of the Derbyshire Regiment of the
Military record shows his birth to be in Derby and living in Longton, Stoke. However the 1891 Census identifies
his birth place as Longton, Stoke, Staffordshire. Living with parents and sister Florence at 7 Prospect
Place. The 1901 Census shows him living with Parents at 21 Barker Street, Longton,
Married 24th December 1906 to Ann Elizabeth Jones (Marriage 1) born 28 Oct 1888 Crackley,
Chesterton, Staffs, Marriage certificate indicates she was living at 71 Lower Spring Road, Longton, Stoke On Trent
and aged 18 when she married.
Sampson worked in Stoke as a pottery worker and moved to Derby to work for Crown
Derby. Was a close friend of John Farley who was asked to look after his wife if anything
should happen to him. See marriage 2 below for more details.
