| The following information sent by a living relative of Arthur Cope:- |
| Arthur Cope was a carpet weaver in Kidderminster and lived at a couple of addresses in St John St and
Park St the next street to Wood st. He apparently spent some time in Hamburg training Germans the
art of weaving. His first wife was Miranda who died possibly in childbirth in 1883. The issuue from this
marriage was Samuel, Neville and Miranda. Samuel I know nothing about, Neville lived in Stourport
and worked his whole life in an engineering works, receiving a gold watch on his retirement. A grandson
of his died in the engine room of HMS Sheffield in the Falklands War. Miranda became the licencee of
the Black Boy Inn in Bewdley. She died falling, down the back stairs. Her husband
took over the licence and reportedly drank himself to death.
Our common ancester Hannah Branford was Arthur's second wife, I believe being married in 1883 the
same year he lost Miranda. The issue from this marriage was Charles Tom, my grandfather, and the
fearsome Aunt Alice. Alice's daughter Marjorie married Arthur Crump, farmer of Tenbury Wells.
Arthur Cope tried his hand at being a grocer but then became a general trader which I think means
he was a second hand dealer. He and his associates became known as the "Forty Thieves" by the
local auctioneers as they colluded to buy goods on the cheap! He ran a second hand store in the main
street of Stourport which was something of a landmark in those days as it had a stuffed crocodile in
the window. He also ran the pub just around the corner it was and still is The Hope and Anchor. |
